Merry Xmas

For those of you who still check the blog in hopes of a new post-- Merry Christmas! Since Xmas is the time of rambling Christmas cards and we are now in digital age, here is my attempt (the pic of me was taking after ice skating and while sipping hot wine in Geneva):

Dear friends and family:

This past year has been busy and full of good times and hard work. Life as taken many twists and turns and if someone would have told me I'd be writing my Xmas card(blog) from Switzerland I would have laughed my ___ off. Switzerland has been an adjustment, but a good one. School is extremely difficult here, and a little different than Claremont, but I am learning a lot and hopefully my tests go well in January. I am really making many friends now and really getting settled into life here. That is the problem with constantly moving-- just as you get settled it is time to leave. The chocolate, scenery, and food is amazing here. But do not get me wrong: I am excited to return to the states!

Okay, so I'm not very good at rambling cards, in fact I'm horrible at it, but I keep in touch with most of you anyways. So I'll keep it short and sweet: Thank you for all your love and support this year with my move to CA and then my move to Switzerland. My life would be multiple times more difficult without it and it means the world to me! You are a constant in my life. THANK YOU.

Merry Christmas.

Adam

One more post.

Here are a couple pics from the lake front in Lausanne. Enjoy.

Bern and Luzern

As a warm up for Paris and other travels over the holidays I went to Bern and Luzern this past weekend. Emma and I met Thomas, a student in our Intl Finance class, and he showed us around his hometown of Bern. I really loved the German part of Switzerland. Everyone was extremely friendly and was very helpful. Enjoy the pics.....my writing has really slacked off lately, but here a 3 posts. I am headed to Paris Thursday and then I'll figure out the rest of my Xmas trip from there!!! Should be exciting and eventful.

UN and Ice Skating in Geneva.

The weekend after Thanksgiving Emma had some Visa issues to take care of in Geneva so I tagged along. Although Geneve(as the non-English speakers call it) isn't my favorite city we did manage to have a great time going to the United Nations, ice skating, and having some hot wine. The hot wine is a winter time tradition in Switzerland. It is red wine spiced with some sort of mulling spice and it really hits the spot after being in the cold. Although it hasn't gotten significantly below 30 degrees Fahrenheit it is damn cold when you walk everywhere and are in the cold for much of the day. That is the luxury of jumping in your care cranking on the heat and driving half a mile to your next destination....in Switzerland you have just grin and walk it.

Here are a few pics from Geneve:

Seeing green.

I tried absinthe last night. Here is a link to the description of absinthe on wikipedia (actually click the word "link" for the wiki description). I can't say that I saw any green ladies or green fairies. Maybe I didn't have enough, as you can see from the pictures it wasn't exactly smooth going down. Although after reading the wikipedia link I don't think we drank it correctly. I did have a great time though with a couple Latin American actuary students and Emma discussing world issues and cultures. Maya even taught me a dance from Equador for giving thanks while gathering maize(corn). Maybe I'll have to teach my dad that for next corn harvest!!! Maya also taught me the hard way that in her culture when someone offers you a drink, you drink it or run the risk of offending them, although I think she was just messing with me a bit.

I continue to feel very fortunate to be able to first hand learn others' world views and
learn from them. Pictures of my first and last absinthe experience :

Okay.....I'm excited for this!

After smelling it-- not so excited.

Salude!!!

YEEEEHOWWWWW!!!

It still burns.....

Whew....get me some juice or something to get this taste out of my mouth.

Side Note:
You'll notice in a few of pictures I'm posting I got a haircut. That was certainly an experience-- getting my haircut by someone who spoke no English. Mainly hand signals and facial expressions where used. It was definitely an iterative process as well-- he would make a couple snips and question if that’s how I wanted it. The only thing we really disagreed on was that he was hell-bent on giving me a mullet! He even got out a magazine to show me that was the style in Switzerland. All I could do was shake my head and make the cutting motion with my fingers on the back of my hair. Once we got on the same page it went smoothly and he did a good non-mullet hair cut!

Its been one week....

Another week gone. As of right now I have about 2 months left until I make the mad rush back to California to start school a week or so late. I hope everybody has a great Thanksgiving holiday! I am really going to miss the food and family/friends around the holidays. I am going to get to have Thanksgiving supper with the GBU organization I am part of; which will definitely be appreciated and help make me not as home sick around the holiday. I will take pics and post them next weekend.

I went to Montreux on Saturday. It was a quaint and very nice town. It is about 45 minutes east of Lausanne by train. It one of the top resort towns in the Swiss Riviera. It is also host to the world-famous Montreux Jazz Festival(it is really too bad that takes place in July, because I would have loved to have seen that). I visited a chateau, a church and took a long 4 mile hike on the lake front. Here are some pics of the scenery.

Hello again....

Wow, who knows where the time goes? It has been awhile since I updated the blog. The problem with waiting so long between blog posts, is you seem to lose all the interesting minor things that happen everyday and make things interesting. As I am doing this blog mostly as a diary for myself, I am definitely going to get back on the blog horse.

Things have been very hectic at school here. I am almost done with midterms though! If there is one lesson the midterms taught me is that I have to put in much more time studying than I am used to. I took a midterm last week and really bombed it-- at least it doesn't count if I perform better on the final. I really thought that I was going to have plenty of time to travel and explore while going to school. The course work here is very demanding and challenging.

A second year student from last year told me that last year 80% of students in the master of finance program failed at least one class-- he reassured me that this was an accurate number ...YIKES! That really puts the pressure on me. Might have been useful info six months ago. On a good note Emma and I are done with our case studies and we even managed to score the highest in the class on the last case.

Anyways enough of the bad news. Been pretty much hanging around Lausanne of late, including the farmer's market, shopping in the town center and a new club. A trip to Bern and possibly to Geneva are on the schedule for the next couple weeks. Here are some random pics:

Fall in Lausanne: the weather isn't so bad(nothing like southern California weather, but the colors are absolutely amazing.

Posing in front of a fountain at the English Garden in Geneva.

Getting ready to try beef taretare, which I can only describe as raw ground beef...as long as I didn't think too much about it, it tasted amazing. I was eating with Emma and Seliz and they swore they would touch it, but even they ended up trying and admitting it was so bad.

Solace. Nothing better than relaxing with a guitar. My roommate Yuan has a guitar and let's me play it whenever I want. I can't thank him enough for this. It was actually strange after not playing for a month and a half. I picked up his guitar and it took me about 20 minutes of playing before my fingers really started working smoothly again. I haven't driven a car for over two months....I really hope it doesn't take me 20 minutes to get the feel again!

Yesterday I took a walk from my apartment building to the town center. As I walked by the lake the sun and the sky were giving me some great scenery.

Me posing in the freezing wind in front of my school.

Emma and I enjoying a cold one after a week of rough tests.

Saturday farmer's market in Lausanne....reminded me of California w/out all the citrus.

Til next time au revoir.
